Successful completion of Shuqaiq Steam PPI by alfanar Bena earns SEC appreciation

    As a preferred contractor for power projects in the Kingdom by various utilities, alfanar Bena was recently appreciated by Saudi Electricity Company for their outstanding support and performance upon the successful completion of Shuqaiq Steam Power Plant Project Stage III.
    Shuqaiq steam power plant consists of four 660 MW heavy fuel oil fired supercritical boilers, a 380kV substation, related seawater intake, flue gas cleaning and all necessary auxiliaries. It will have a Power generation capacity of 2640 MW. On its full operation, the Shuqaiq power plant will be generating enough electricity to meet the requirements of more than 2 million households in the region.
    alfanar has successfully managed to effectively contribute to the completion of this strategic and prestigious project within the targeted time, through the execution of civil and as well as architectural works, associated with around 64 buildings and 24 major civil structures through its own skilled resources and competent staff which reached 2,150 workers and engineers at the project’s peak.
    The strict implementation of the highest quality standards and adherence to safety requirements supported the projects team to complete the project which is slated to be one of the most important power projects Middle East managed by the Saudi Electricity Company.

    As part of its journey for continuous development, alfanar Construction’s Toastmasters Club has been accepted into the International Toastmasters Membership and is vested with all the rights and privileges of the Toastmasters International Constitution.

    The alfanar Toastmasters Club is chartered as an International Corporate Club for alfanar employee members, with the role of enhancing organization culture and improving employee cognition, attitude and skills.
    alfanar Toastmasters Club, on one hand, uses learning strategies to develop the leadership, public speaking, and communication skills of its employee members. Dubai World Trade Center witnessed the remarkable presence of alfanar at the MEE 2019

    alfanar had a remarkable presence at MEE 2019, the region’s leading trade event for the power and electricity sector. Inaugurated by H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, MEE 2019 was held at the Dubai World Trade Center, from March 5 – 7, 2019. As the Platinum sponsor of MEE 2019, alfanar welcomed visitors and participants from around the world to its expanded pavilion, where within the pavilion’s ample space alfanar showcased a new line-up of products and solutions from its various business units.
    alfanar’s pavilion attracted the attention of VIP’s from 130 countries, including ambassadors, government officials, and senior-level industry decision makers. Pavilion visitors were greatly impressed by the display of the latest collections of high-tech electrical product innovations and equipment including switches and sockets, LV, MV, HV power cables, special applications cables, distribution transformers, power distribution and control panels of low and medium voltage, and protection panels.
    The exhibition also served as a platform for alfanar to unveil its newest product portfolio for Smart Grid Technology, Substation Automation Systems (SAS), Distribution Automation Systems (DAS), and comprehensive electrical solutions to meet the requirements of the Gulf and Middle Eastern countries as well as the Saudi market.
    New technology on display included a simulation of a Smart Home equipped with alfanar’s latest home automation solutions and products in addition to alfanar’s electric vehicles charging stations that are developed by ZIV, alfanar’s Spanish company.
    The pavilion featured alfanar products and solutions produced in its manufacturing facilities from around the world, including “KOPP” in Germany, “CONTACTUM” in UK, “ZIV” in Spain, “EA” in Italy, and “SFA” in Turkey.
    alfanar Construction Division presented its unique engineering services, represented by testing and commissioning, the training institute, operations and maintenance solutions, technical services - including repairing and rewinding services for motors, transformers and generators, and introduced its expansion plans to penetrate new markets in the Gulf and Arab countries and Saudi Arabia.
    A highlight of MEE 2019 and of great interest to pavilion visitors were alfanar’s demonstrations of the latest solutions and techniques for solar CSP (concentrating solar power), PV (photovoltaic) systems, and wind farms. These informative demonstrations featured the options for development, financing, design, engineering, procurement,construction and maintenance of conventional and renewable projects.

    As one of the strategic partners for the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), alfanar Engineering Services was the official sponsor of the Excellence, Operation and Maintenance Forum held from 6 – 7 March 2019 at the Hotel Kempinski in AL Khobar. The forum aimed to exchange experiences and discuss the latest techniques in this field.
    Under the patronage of Eng. Ali Bin Abdulrahman AL Hazmi, Governor, SWCC, the event was attended by senior management, operations directors and managers of SWCC. The forum discussed the best strategies in achieving excellence in operation and maintenance and highlighted the various best practices in the sector.
    The keynote presentation by Mr. Adil Aslam, Production Manager-Motors, alfanar Technical Services, received the best presentation award at the forum. The presentation covered the topic of Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI), a process of submerging a fully wound electric apparatus such as a rotor or stator in resin that will have superior characteristics which will support a longer and more maintenance-free life span of the motors.
    alfanar Engineering Services also showcased its other solutions like Testing & Commissioning, Operation & Maintenance, Training, and Steel Fabrication that provide a complete solution portfolio for the complete asset lifecycle – from installation to maintenance.

alfanar signs strategic agreements at MEE 2019

    On the sidelines of alfanar’s recent participation at the MEE 2019 Exhibition, the region’s leading trade event for the power and electricity sector, the company signed numerous strategic and partnership agreements with renowned regional and international companies in various business sectors. The agreements are in line with alfanar’s vision of building distinguished business relationships that embrace technological advancement in manufacturing and product development and expand new horizons for its business activities.
    On the first day of MEE 2019, company delegations visited the alfanar pavilion to sign agreements with alfanar. Three agreements for electrical product development were signed by the alfanar Electrical Division, represented by Mr. Mohammed Al Swailem, GM Transformers and Cables Factories. The first agreement was with Borouge, an ADNOC company and a leading provider of innovative plastic solutions in the Middle East. The MoU streamlines the supply operations of cable insulation material used for alfanar (LV, MV, HV) cables throughout 2019.
    Al Swailem also signed a contract with DUCAB for the annual supply of “Copper Rod” for 2019, and a MoU with M & I Materials, a UK based company, to provide advanced solutions for special oils for transformers (natural and synthetic ester oils).
    Another agreement to highlight is alfanar’s strategic partnership with Huawei Technology, a pioneer in the development and production of IoT and Smart Solutions and devices for homes and buildings. The basis of this agreement is a cooperation whereby Huawei develops and manufactures smart systems and devices for alfanar. The main objective of the cooperation is to add additional key devices to alfanar’s portfolio of IoT and Smart Solutions for homes and buildings to meet the increased demand for these products and solutions in the MENA market.
    alfanar Technical Services, represented by Mr. Amer Al Ajami, GM alfanar Engineering Services, signed an agreement with the International Development Company (IDC), represented by Mr. Solaiman Naim, Director IDC. This agreement will enhance the cooperation with IDC to promote ATS services, including the repair and rewind of static and rotating equipment in Abu Dhabi.
    Al Ajami also signed a MoU with WEG, a pioneer in the production of electrical motors, represented by Mr. Colin Cox, Sales Director-Middle East. This agreement will enhance alfanar Technical Services current portfolio as a total solutions provider and manufacturer of LV and MV motors and supports the country's IKTVA program.
    alfanar International Sales & Marketing also signed their considerable share of agreements, wherein Mr. Mohammed Fahad Al Otheim, International Sales & Marketing Manager, signed Non-Exclusive Product Distributer contracts with some of alfanar agents in various targeted export markets, including Iraq, Yemen, Sudan and Jordan. The purpose is to enhance and develop alfanar’s export activities in these countries by improving the efficiency of business relations with distributors, motivate them and set their yearly sales plans, targets, and marketing strategies and thereby enhance the market share of alfanar products in export market.
    alfanar Training Institute (ATI), signed a MoU for cooperation with National Power Academy, an industry-led academy for the Kingdom’s power and energy sectors supported by Saudi Aramco, represented by Mr. Hussan Hanbazazah, Aramco Executive Director, in which ATI undertakes to support the National Power Academy in its technical training programs. The signing of this MoU will further strengthen ATI’s position as a trusted partner in providing advanced technical training to renowned utilities.
    The agreements signing ceremony witnessed the presence of Mr. Abdul Salam Al Mutlaq, alfanar Chairman; Mr. Sabah Al Mutlaq, Vice Chairman; Mr. Michel Thoraval, President AED; Mr. Jamal Wadi, CEO – alfanar Development; and many colleagues and representatives from alfanar.
    During the signing ceremony, Mr. Abdul Salam Al Mutlaq, alfanar Chairman, highlighted alfanar’s strong interest in establishing partnerships that will strengthen the company’s competency level and advance the continuous development of its capabilities and services. alfanar Supports the 4L Rally Team Travelling from France to Morocco for a Humanitarian Cause

    alfanar is extending its support for a student’s rally from France to Morocco which will distribute furniture and other donations to less fortunate children in Marrakech, Morocco.
    With more than 2,600 participants, the 4L Trophy is the largest humanitarian student rally in Europe. The 22nd edition of the rally commenced on 21st February 2019 with the participants jump starting their great adventure that covers a total of 6,000 kms from France, through Spain, and Morocco on board the legendary car, the Renault R4!
    More than just a sports and solidary adventure, the 4L Trophy is a humanitarian challenge. The team alfanar is sponsoring is Team Sp4rkl comprised of 2 young engineering undergraduates.
    Previous rallies have funded the construction of several schools, with a total of 22 classrooms and 2 sanitary blocs, in Morocco in cooperation with Association Enfants du Désert. Each year more than 20,000 children receive furniture with which to study. The 4L Trophy also collects over 84 tons of food for the Croix Rouge who redistributes it to people in need.
    This year when the teams reach Marrakech, Morocco, they will distribute school furniture, sports equipment, and other donated items to underprivileged children in Morocco, in cooperation with Enfants du Désert Association.

alfanar Vice Chairman meets with Gujarat CM as part of the 300MW wind project in India

    alfanar Vice Chairman, Mr. Sabah Al Mutlaq recently called upon the Honorable Chief Minister of Gujarat Mr. Vijay Rupani at the Chief Minister’s office in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India for the announcement on the developments in the 300MW wind energy project that alfanar had won recently. The 300 MW Bhuj Wind Project in Gujarat was awarded to alfanar Energy by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (Trance III)– a company of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India.
    During the meeting, Mr. Sabah announced the awarding of the EPC of the project to Senvion, a leading wind turbine manufacturer, who were also present during the meeting.
    The project is located in the Kutch district of Gujara t and upon commissioning of the project, it will generate enough clean energy to supply the power needs of almost 290,000 homes in the region. The project is expected to come up about 50 kilometers, north-east of Bhuj with a total of 131 wind turbines that will generate the required 300 MW.
    The project is slated to be commissioned within 18 months from the signing of the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement). The project is expected to boost the wind power generation capacity of Gujarat which currently stands at over 5500 MW.
    While briefing the Chief Minister on the project, Mr. Sabah mentioned, “As a key player in the power industry in the Middle East since 1976, our commitment to excellence has been instrumental in expanding alfanar’s portfolio and our geographical expansion, particularly in developing clean energy. India continues to be a promising market, particularly in its recent shift to renewable energy development made possible by the vision and support of the Government of India.”
    As one of the leading global payers in developing clean energy, the development portfolio of alfanar Energy jumped to 1.4GW with the awarding of this project.
    alfanar’s core experience in executing more than $10bn worth of EPC projects will be a strong value addition to the project and will be utilizing its experience to provide the EPCM services for the project. This will ensure that the project is executed with taking the highest safety and quality standards and to monitor the schedule.

alfanar Bena achieves new safety milestone 20 Million Man-Hours LTI Free @ PP13 Combine Cycle Power Plant Dhurma

    alfanar Bena has been recognized by the SEC for its’ outstanding contribution in achieving the extraordinary milestone of 20 Million Safe Working Hours without a lost time incident at the PP13 Combined Cycle Power Plant Project.
    alfanar Construction continues to be an industry leader in safety. alfanar’s contributions were duly acknowledged in this achievement by being awarded a 20 million milestone shield, which was presented to alfanar by Mr. Abdul Rahman Al Shaiq (Senior Project Manager – Saudi Electricity Company.
    It’s worth to mention that alfanar received the certificate of accomplishment in recognition for the exemplary team work on the implementation of SEC 5 Star Management system and successfully achieving 87% with a four-star rating during the SEC/ISD external audit conducted on November 2017.

alfanar Engineering Services Supports Saudi Aramco’s 14th Annual Corporate Maintenance Event

    As a trusted solutions provider for several of Saudi Aramco’s facilities around the Kingdom, alfanar Engineering Services was the Keynote Sponsor of Saudi Aramco’s 14th Annual Corporate Maintenance event – MaconX, under the theme of “Maintenance and Reliability” which was held April 2nd – 4th at the Kempinski Al Othman Hotel in Al Khobar.
    MaconX was inaugurated by Mr. Abdullah M. Al-Mansour, Executive Director, PD&T, Saudi Aramco, who on visiting the alfanar stand spoke of the technological advancements made by home-grown companies in the maintenance field and the support they provide to the utility’s IKTVA program.
    The event which focused on Industrial Revolution 4.0, played host to over 300 maintenance and reliability professionals and senior management from Saudi Aramco and its joint ventures. The forum provided an excellent platform for various solution providers like alfanar, who came from different parts of the world to share knowledge and showcase solutions that will help Saudi Aramco and its JVs to achieve operational excellence in their maintenance and reliability functions.
    Mr. Adil Aslam, Motors Manager, alfanar Technical Services, gave a presentation on “IIoT based Condition Monitoring for Electrical Machines” which was well received by the attendees. The alfanar booth showcased demonstrations on the concept of IIoT on electrical equipment and how this is a breakthrough in preventive maintenance for companies such as Saudi Aramco who have large numbers of electrical motors installed in various plants.

    As a trusted partner for installation, operation and maintenance, alfanar Engineering Services once again proved its commitment of being a trusted partner for utilities.
    The testing and commissioning team has successfully completed the replacement of critical electrical components at the Saudi Electricity Company PP7 Powerplant despite the various challenges of design, logistical issues, and a short time frame.
    The project included the dismantling of the old Generator Circuit breakers, and the complete provision of engineering, supply, delivery, installation, testing and commissioning of new SF6 Generator Circuit breakers. Despite the short shutdown time available for dismantling, the motivated team completed the installation ahead of schedule, while complying with the “five-star safety procedures” and zero accidents.
    The expertise and the professionalism demonstrated by the alfanar Testing & Commissioning team in handling such emergencies was greatly appreciated by Engineer Maadi Alotaibi, Technical Department Manager, Generation Operation Center, Saudi Electricity Co., who commended alfanar on the fast response time and the quality of work demonstrated.

alfanar organizes a Protection Principles of Power Systems training course for Prince Sattam University students

    In continuation of alfanar’s Social Service Programs and its initiative in supporting educational institutions, alfanar Training Institute organized a training course on Protection Principles of Power Systems for Prince Sattam University students, Al Kharj.
    The course aimed at introducing Power Systems’ Protection and highlighted its importance, the components and functional requirements, in addition to outlining substation equipment within power systems that require protection, and the types of electrical protection including protecting underground cables, substation busbars, overhead conductors, generators and transformers.
    The training course witnessed a big interaction and participation from the trainees who admired the valuable content presented by the training specialists that added to their practical experience. The training course ended with a question and answer session which gave the students an opportunity to interact with the trainers and ask specific questions.
    Following the training session Prince Sattam University Management presented a token of appreciation to alfanar for its contribution and efforts in providing a successful training program to its students. The award was received on behalf of alfanar by Mr. Amro Al Amro, Training Specialist.

    As one of the trusted partners for operation, maintenance, and plant and equipment reliability in the region, alfanar Engineering Services was recently invited by Saudi Aramco – Power Systems to showcase its portfolio at the Power System Operation, Maintenance and Reliability Excellence event held on 26 Dec 2018 at the Movenpick Hotel, Yanbu.
    The one-day conference was an opportunity for leading local and international companies to showcase their latest innovations, services, products and solutions, and to learn about the latest technologies, and share industry experiences and information.
    alfanar Engineering Services showcased its field services, operations, and maintenance services to visitors from various utilities, major oil and gas, and petrochemical companies including Saudi Aramco, Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, Yasref, Sabic, etc.
    A highlight of the event was the simulated presentation of alfanar Technical Services’ Jubail facility, which gave visitors a virtual reality experience.

alfanar Testing and Commissioning attains honorary shield in recognition of quality and safety at Jazan Refinery

    With a strong commitment for adherence to client’s safety programmes, alfanar Testing and Commissioning’s quality and safety culture has been recognized by Air Products Inc., an American company, at the strategic Aramco Jazan ASU project.
    The shield reflects Air Products’ appreciation of alfanar engineers achieving the 17,400 safe man-hours milestone at the Jazan Refinery project. The ATC team was the commissioning partner for the main electrical substation at the Jazan Refinery. One of the world’s largest refineries, this substation will feed power to around 50% of the production cycle.
    Mr. Amar al Ajmi, General Manager Engineering Services, complimented the engineers for this major milestone. While addressing the team he mentioned, “The dedication and efforts of AT&C during the pre-commissioning and commission stages assisted the clients achieve a critical milestone of putting the substation under operation as per the schedule."
    The recognition further highlights AT&C’s unwavering commitment to health and safety, which is now an integral part of the culture of the company. This recognition will also help in establishing long-term business relationships based on mutual integration of safety beliefs.

    alfanar Engineering Services recently hosted a group of executives in the field of electrical network maintenance and equipment from various companies in the Kingdom for a seminar, at the Marriott Hotel in Riyadh, under the theme of “Power System Best Practices in Successful Maintenance Strategies and Reliable Operations”.
    A number of influential personalities in the field of maintenance and operations attended the conference, which included a panel discussion headed by Mr. Ibrahim Al Jarboo, Vice President- Maintenance, National Grid SA, Mr. Adnan Al Qahtani, Head of Electrical Maintenance SWCC, and Mr. Amer Alajmi, General Manager- alfanar Engineering Services.
    The panelists spoke on the various best practices and the challenges that Saudi companies face in the operation and maintenance sector. The panelists further highlighted various success stories while also insisting on the critical need of developing successful strategies for operation and maintenance.
    Mr. Sattam Al-Mutairi, Executive Manager, Sales & Studies, alfanar Engineering Services, presented a technical paper under the theme of “Trusted local partner for optimizing your asset lifecycle.” The presentation highlighted the operational excellence and the critical facilities and services developed by alfanar Engineering Services that provide 24/7 services to strategic installations and projects throughout the Kingdom.

alfanar Engineering Services celebrates its Annual Day

    The alfanar Engineering Services annual day celebrations were the perfect opportunity for employees from the various business units; alfanar Testing & Commissioning, alfanar Operation & Maintenance, alfanar Training and alfanar Steel, to come together to celebrate the spirit of success and unity.
    Hosted at the Pearl Resorts in the Thummamah Area, more than 700 employees and their families gathered to participate in the fun filled activities such as sports, games and team building events. The sporting events kicked off the morning and included football, volleyball and water games. A delicious buffet lunch with entertainment followed. The children’s program consisted of various activities, games, tattoo drawings and a bouncy castle play area. A magic show delighted the audience of all ages.
    Addressing the entire gathering, Mr. Sabah Al Mutlaq, alfanar Vice-Chairman and Mr. Amer Al Ajmi, General Manager – Engineering Services, congratulated the team for the successful year and thanked the team members for their cooperation and commitment. Prizes were then distributed to the winners and participants of the various activities before the fun-filled day ended.

8th Group of National Grid SA technicians successfully graduate from alfanar Training Institute

    The alfanar Training Institute is proud to be at the forefront of imparting technical knowledge through the training and nurturing of qualified young citizens. The Institute recently honored a group of 10 technicians from the National Grid SA who had successfully completed an extensive 9-month training programme titled “Substation Protection”, comprised of 100 training days in 5 sessions.
    The successful trainees were provided with the basic knowledge, technical background and engineering concepts for the drawings, major equipment operations and maintenance of modern electrical power substations. The curriculum involved the basic concepts, functions, tools and devices used in the field of power system protection and automation. Emphasis was placed on the safety aspect of electrical work with the recommendation of effective safety practices to be used in the field. As part of the training program, the students visited the alfanar MV switchgear factory to gain a further understanding of how the equipment is manufactured. The group also visited the 380kV and 132kV substations where they underwent training on GIS and power transformers.
    Mr. Ibrahim Al Jarbou, Maintenance VP National Grid SA, presented the successful trainees with their graduation certificates and a plaque of appreciation in the presence of Mr. Amer Al Ajmi, General Manager, the trainers, and management of alfanar Training Institute. A shield of excellence was awarded to the top trainee who had excelled in both the practical and theoretical exams.
    alfanar Training Institute provides a unique advanced vocational training program as well as simulation and practical application training. Since the inception of the Institute, it has imparted more than 79,000 training hours to 209 trainees which include engineers and technicians. The success of this program is a result of the level of customization of training courses that prepare engineers and technicians with the practical skills that suit the work requirements of various ministries, government sectors, facilities, universities and hospitals.
    Along with the Saudi Council of Engineers, ATI is a founder and pioneer of the “Be Ready” programme aimed at empowering Saudi citizens by preparing them with the necessary practical skills and training to successfully enter the job market.

alfanar Operation & Maintenance partners with GE as an authorized reseller of monitoring and diagnostics products and services

    alfanar Operation & Maintenance extended its portfolio after entering into a channel partnership with GE Grid Solutions for Monitoring and Diagnostics products in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With this partnership agreement alfanar Operation & Maintenance will resell GE’s Hydran, Intellix and Kelman products for diagnostic and monitoring services that are used in multiple industries.
    The partnership agreement was signed at the alfanar booth during the Middle East Electricity Exhibition which was held from 6th to 8th March 2018 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The agreement was signed by Mr. Amer Al Ajmi, General Manager – alfanar Engineering Services, and Mr. Mazen Hamadallah, MD, GE Grid Automation, in the presence of Mr. Abdul Salam Al Mutlaq, alfanar Chairman, and Mr. Sabah Al Mutlaq, alfanar Vice Chairman, along with the other management and operations representatives of alfanar and GE. Mr. Ibrahim Al Jarbou, VP-Maintenance, National Grid SA, was also present to witness the signing ceremony.
    alfanar Operation & Maintenance, through this partner agreement, will be enhancing its preventative maintenance and asset management capabilities within the Grids for detecting gas levels, bushing and PD discharge monitoring by using online intelligent systems to detect and alert any transformer fault gases and moisture. These are just a few of the services that will be offered.
    In addition to the equipment sales, alfanar Operation & Maintenance will also offer pre-installation, installation and commissioning services as well as any required maintenance and calibration for the monitoring and diagnostic products.
